Three doormen in black polo shirts leaned on the railing at the top of the steps at Sabai Dee Body Massage. One nodded and pulled the glass door open before I reached it, and the cold air hit me straight away. The door shuts behind me and the noise of Second Road went with it. Inside, only the hum of the air conditioning remained. There was no music, just near silence.

The Room: Badges, Prices, and Making a Choice

A short hallway, then a room opened up on the left. It was built like a small theatre, tiers of benches rising away on two sides from a seating area. Fairly bright lights lit the area; there was nowhere to hide. Fifty or sixty women sat on them in evening dresses, each with a coloured badge pinned on them.

There were no other customers. Just me.

I sat in a central position, one row back, as I didn’t have the nerve to sit at the front. I ordered a beer for 190 Baht. Before the beer arrived, I was given a laminated card with four coloured areas, each with a number: 3,300, 3,800, 4,300 and 4,800. The colours matched the women’s badge colours. No further explanation was offered or needed. In general, the slimmer and/or more attractive women cost more. The beer arrived, and I was asked to pay.

I turned backed to the women to find them still trying to get my attention and highlighting their assets. A woman in the front row tapped her badge. Someone higher up waved. A couple of them called out “Hello, handsome” and laughed. Two women made it obvious they’d go together. I’m was holding the beer with both hands and wondered what I’ve got myself into. It was quite intimidating when there are no other customers.

The other half was a tiled wet area with a shower, a bath big enough for a small family and one of those inflatable mattresses propped against the wall.
