Pattaya ladies: who they are, why they come and what they cost
OK, now we get into the interesting details. Pattaya ladies are the main reason you are here, so let’s get into it.
Nobody books a solo trip to Pattaya for the temples. Men come for the Pattaya ladies, and the city has spent decades building an industry around that fact. There are always more ladies than there are customers looking for them, and they come in every shape and personality. Most first-timers have plenty of enthusiasm. What they lack is a realistic idea of what Pattaya ladies cost, who these women are and how the financial arrangements work for both sides of the bar.

This guide covers the ladies who come to Pattaya to work in the bars: where they come from, what they want, where they work, what they actually cost, and how to treat them so the night goes well for everyone. It is written for a man on his first or second visit.
Who are the Pattaya ladies?
Most of the women you meet in the bars are from Isaan, the north-east of the country. It is a poor, mainly rural region influenced by Laos in the north and Cambodia in the south, and rice is the main source of income. Many of the women have limited schooling, and a good number have a child from a previous relationship, usually with a Thai partner who is no longer around. Some are new to the city and some have worked the same bars for years.
Thailand has no meaningful safety net. If you are out of work, you have no income. The system that replaces it is the family, and Thai children are raised from birth to feel obliged to support their parents when the need arises. The burden lands hardest on the eldest daughter, and in a region with high unemployment the need is almost always there.
In that setting, sending money home is the job rather than a favour, and a bar girl is often the main income for a household hundreds of kilometres away.
Why they come and what they want
Most of the ladies arrive under real or perceived pressure to support their families, and the pressure is greater when there is a child. They have also heard the stories: money is easy in Pattaya and a foreigner will come along, marry them and look after everyone.
Then reality arrives. Some meet a man who promises exactly that, goes home to arrange it and never contacts her again, and her friends have the same story. Within a short time a lot of them settle on a more practical view: a foreign customer is a source of income, not a future. That suits a man in town for a couple of weeks. It is full of traps for the man who has not worked out what he is dealing with.
So what does a lady in a bar want? Money, first and foremost, and there are several ways to earn it: commission on lady drinks, the income from going with a customer and, for some, a regular sponsor (more on that in the red flags section). What she would also like is a customer who is honest, pays fairly and does not turn the night into a drama.
Two ideas are worth dropping before you leave the airport:
- You are not there to rescue anyone. A holiday is not enough to change a family’s finances and she has not asked you to try.
- Pattaya will not produce a wife on a first trip. Some good women do work in the bars, and I have linked a story about one below. But a newcomer shopping for a “good one” is exactly what the professionals are best at spotting.

Where Pattaya ladies work
Where you meet a lady shapes the price, the pace and the manners. The main types of venue:
- Beer bars. Open-air bars found across Soi 6, Soi Buakhao, the LK Metro laneway and Walking Street. Relaxed, cheaper and conversational. You sit, order a drink and chat. This is where most first-timers should start.
- Go-go bars. Indoor venues with dancers on stage, found on Walking Street and in the LK Metro area. Higher drink prices, higher bar fines and more of a show. You get a good look at everyone before you decide, which is a real advantage. Some dancers are “agency girls” who work for a separate business rather than the bar. They cost the venue more, so bar fines and lady drinks can run higher, and many of the better-looking dancers work this way.
- Gentlemen’s clubs. Upmarket lounges with a more polished atmosphere, higher lady drink prices and a more subdued mood. They suit a man who wants a quieter setting and does not mind paying for it.
- Service staff. Waitresses, cashiers, bartenders and the mamasan (the woman who runs the floor) are employees, not menu items. A friendly waitress is being friendly. Do not assume anything and do not treat her like a dancer.
Then there are the ladies who do not work in a bar at all. I cover them further down under freelancers. For the geography, see Pattaya Bar Areas and Bar Types.
Thai culture and how to treat Pattaya ladies
Saving face
Face is pride and reputation, and it is more Asian than uniquely Thai. Telling someone they got something wrong is normal in most Western countries. In Thailand it is rude, and a Thai person will often say something untrue rather than make you uncomfortable, which explains a fair few “yes” answers that turn out to mean “no”.
The practical rule is simple: never raise your voice and never show anger. Not at the bar, not at a waitress, not at a taxi driver and not over a bill. Shouting ends the argument rather than winning it, because the person you are shouting at loses face, stops listening and quite often gets reinforcements.
Rule of thumb: If you feel your voice rising, stop talking, smile and ask for the manager or the cashier.
Face also has a very specific bar application. Once you have taken a lady out of a bar, she does not like seeing you return the next night and take one of her workmates. In front of everyone, it tells the room she was not up to standard. Part of that is lost income and part of it is a real feeling of being discarded.
If you like the look of more than one lady, buy a drink for both while you talk and joke with them. When you have decided, say to the one you are taking that night, loud enough for the other to hear, that you will be back tomorrow for her friend. Both of them now know what you are and what to expect. It costs nothing and it keeps you welcome in the bar.
Heads, feet and the rest of the body
Some rules are worth learning before you need them:
- The head is the highest part of the body. Do not touch a Thai person’s head or ruffle their hair, however friendly the mood.
- Feet are the lowest. Do not point your feet at people, at a Buddha image or at a table where someone is eating. Do not step over anyone’s legs.
- Do not joke about the monarchy. Not a little bit, not after a few beers. Thailand takes this seriously and the law backs it up.
Religion: Buddhism and the amulet in her handbag
Thailand is overwhelmingly Buddhist and the ladies are no exception. Most practise it in a practical, everyday way: they make merit by giving food or money to monks, they wai a spirit house on the way past and a lot of them carry a small Buddha amulet, either on a chain around the neck or tucked in the handbag. Many bars keep a small spirit house near the entrance too. Do not lean on it.
The principle is the same as the head and feet rule. A Buddha image is the highest thing in the room and must never be put low, and I learned that one the hard way. I was out with a young lady at the Sanctuary of Truth and she asked me to hold her handbag while I took her photo. I needed both hands for the camera, so I put the bag between my legs. What I did not know was that her “Buddha” was in it. She was not happy, and I had no idea why. To her, a sacred amulet was sitting between a man’s legs.
A few habits will keep you out of the same trouble:
- Treat her handbag with care. Hold it in your hands or set it on a chair or table. Never on the floor and never between your legs. If you need both hands, hand it back.
- Do not touch an amulet on her neck or in her bag unless she offers it to you.
- Keep Buddha images high. No Buddha-face novelty shirts and no tattoos as a joke.
- At temples, cover your shoulders and knees, take your shoes off where asked and keep your voice down.
- Give monks room. Women do not touch monks or hand things to them directly, so do not put her in that position.
Respect is a practical policy
The ladies are working professionals and also people, so treat them that way and most of the time you will get more back than you put in. Part of that is honesty about money: do not sell false hope to avoid paying. The money is a little to you and a lot to them.
How it works: lady drinks, bar fines and clear agreements
Conversation and lady drinks
Sit down, order a beer and let the conversation start. A lady will usually join you within a few minutes and ask, in some order, where you are from, how long you are staying and whether she can have a drink. That drink is a lady drink. She receives a commission on it and the bar earns from it. You are buying about half an hour of her company.
You are allowed to say no. Do it with a smile: “Not right now, thanks, but sit and chat.” Or set your terms at the start: one drink, then see how it goes. Nobody in a decent bar is offended by a polite boundary.
How do you tell rapport from routine? You mostly cannot, and you do not need to. Every lady in a bar has practised the same warm lines on a hundred men and most are good at it. She can be friendly and professional at once. Enjoy the conversation for what it is, and treat any suggestion that you are unlike every other man she has met with the same pinch of salt she brings to your compliments.
The bar fine
The bar fine is the most misunderstood term in Pattaya, so here it is plainly. A bar fine is a fee paid to the venue to release the lady from the remainder of her shift. It compensates the bar for the income it loses when she leaves early. It goes to the bar, not to her.
It is not a payment for her time, transport, food or anything else. Whatever you agree with her after you walk out is a separate, private arrangement and has nothing to do with what you paid the bar. Newcomers who assume the bar fine covers everything are responsible for most of the disagreements I hear about.

Agree everything before you leave
Nearly every end-of-night dispute I have seen or heard about came from a fuzzy agreement. The fix is polite, direct and takes about 30 seconds. Before you pay the bar fine, settle these with her:
- How long she is staying, either short-time (ST, roughly one to two hours) or long-time (LT, overnight)
- The amount in Baht, said out loud, with no assumptions
- Whether food, drinks or a taxi home are part of it
- Where you are going, and whether the hotel will let her in (see the freelancer section below)
Settle on the price before you pay the bar fine, particularly in a go-go bar. It is perfectly acceptable and prevents an ugly scene at the end. Then pay when she is leaving, not before. Paying up front is a good way to lower the standard of service. If you mention you might add a little extra for a good time, it is amusing how often the evening improves.
Taking two ladies
If you want two ladies, ask the mamasan. She knows which ones are comfortable working together and the bar will arrange it quickly if it can. Bar fining two unrelated ladies and hoping for the best usually ends with one waiting in the bathroom while you finish with the other. If you have taken one lady and she agrees to bring a friend from another bar, let her choose. She will pick someone she gets along with.
Special services
Sooner or later a man wants something outside the standard arrangement. It is worth knowing how to ask, because asking the wrong way gets a no, or worse, a scene.
I was out in Soi 6 with a mate from home who said he would like to try greek. I knew the bar manager, so I had a quiet word. My mate was upstairs soon after. You do not need to know the manager for this. Any mamasan can do the same job, and it is the same approach as arranging two ladies.
- Ask the mamasan, not the lady. She knows which ladies are comfortable with what and she can ask on your behalf. Asking a lady in front of her workmates puts her on the spot, and a lady who cannot say no without losing face will often say yes and regret it.
- Do it before the bar fine. Have the conversation quietly, before you commit to anything.
- Expect to pay more. It usually costs extra, and the price is agreed in Baht before you leave, like everything else.
- No means no. Plenty of ladies decline certain things and that is the end of it. Do not haggle, sulk or hint that she is being difficult. Ask the mamasan for someone else.
- Condoms every time. That is not up for negotiation, whatever the price.
Photographs
Most ladies do not mind a photo, but ask every time. Never photograph inside a go-go bar or any bar with nudity without permission, and expect an unfriendly response if you try. Few women will agree to private images, and pornography is illegal in Thailand, so be careful what you record.

What Pattaya ladies cost
The old 300 Baht bar fine is gone. Prices below are baseline ranges compiled from published 2026 price lists and guides, checked in September 2026. They are a starting point for a budget, not a rate card. Every venue, lady and night is a little different, and I will update these against what I see on the ground.
Remember the split: the lady drink and the bar fine go to the bar, and the short-time or long-time payment goes to her.
2026 baseline ranges (Baht)
| Venue category | Lady drink | Bar fine | Short-time (ST) to her | Long-time (LT) to her |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beer bar (Soi 6, Soi Buakhao, LK Metro beer bars) | 150 – 200 | 400 – 600* | 1,500 – 2,000 | 2,000 – 3,000 |
| Beer bar (Walking Street area) | 180 – 220 | 500 – 700 | 1,500 – 2,500 | 2,500 – 3,500 |
| Go-go bar (LK Metro and mid-range) | 200 – 250 | 800 – 1,500* | 2,500 – 4,000 | 4,000 – 5,000 |
| Go-go bar (Walking Street and premium) | 220 – 300 | 1,000 – 2,500 (up to 3,000 for popular dancers on busy nights) | 3,000 – 5,000 | 5,000 – 6,000+ |
| Freelancer / dating app | Not applicable | Not applicable | 1,500 – 3,000 | 2,500 – 5,000 |
Footnote on venue nuances:
- Gentlemen’s clubs (GCs): Lady drinks in daytime expat clubs (Third Road & Darkside) typically sit between ฿150 – ฿200, while premium hostess lounges and high-end karaoke clubs run ฿250 – ฿350+. Bar fines and policies vary widely depending on whether it’s an afternoon social club or an upscale venue. Always clarify at the door.
- Soi 6 daytime take-outs: Standard on-premise upstairs room visits carry a modest room rental (around ฿300 – ฿500) and short-time fee. Taking a lady off the street during peak afternoon hours often incurs a higher bar fine (฿800 – ฿1,500) than a standard Buakhao beer bar.
- Go-go early bird surcharges: Many premier go-go bars on Walking Street enforce a time-tiered bar fine: ฿2,000 – ฿2,500+ if taking someone out before 10:00 – 11:00 PM (or for top-tier Coyote/Model contracts), dropping to ฿1,000 – ฿1,500 after midnight.
Incidental costs
| Item | Typical cost (Baht) |
|---|---|
| Beer at a beer bar | 70 – 120 |
| Beer at a go-go bar | 120 – 250 |
| Baht bus, central Pattaya | 15 per person |
| Baht bus, Jomtien and Naklua | 20 per person |
| Grab or Bolt across town | 80 – 150 |
| Motorbike taxi, short trip | 40 – 80 (100 or more late at night) |
| Tip for waitress or bar staff | 20 – 50 |
| Tip for a go-go dancer on stage | 20 Baht note |
| Entry to most bars and go-gos | Free (you pay for drinks) |
| Hotel joiner fee, where charged | Varies by hotel, ask before booking. Most do not. |
What moves the price
- Location. Walking Street and premium go-gos charge the top of every range. Soi 6 and the Soi Buakhao area charge the bottom.
- Time of night. A mate swears that some go-gos ask less for a lady in the last hour or two before closing, and more for a popular dancer early on a weekend. There is no posted rule, so ask.
- Season. Prices rise in the high season, roughly November to February, and around major holidays. In the quiet months you can usually negotiate.
- Prestige and agency. A dancer from a well-known venue, or one working through an agency, will be at the top of the range.
- Negotiation. Everything in the table except the bar fine is negotiable between you and her. The bar fine is set by the venue.
The “10,000 Baht rule”: the cost of a night out
On paper, the mathematical floor looks modest: sitting down for two local beers (฿180), buying two lady drinks (฿360), paying a basic beer bar fine (฿500), and agreeing on short-time (฿1,500) totals roughly 2,500 to 3,000 Baht.
But nights in Pattaya rarely stop at two beers.
Once you factor in bar hopping, buying a drink for the mamasan or a game of Connect Four, late-night street food, Bolt or Baht bus rides, and fair tipping, that floor evaporates.
If your evening moves to Walking Street or LK Metro go-gos, the economics jump dramatically:
- An early-evening bar fine alone can cost 2,000 to 2,500 Baht.
- Lady drinks for dancers and coyote models push 220 to 300 Baht each.
- Realistic long-time (LT) expectations for premier club dancers sit between 5,000 and 6,000 Baht.
The takeaway: While you can easily nurse cold beers on Soi Buakhao for under 1,500 Baht, anyone planning an unrestricted, high-tempo night involving go-go clubs, multiple rounds of drinks, and overnight company should budget 10,000 Baht.
10,000 Baht is the benchmark for a carefree night out, one where you never have to count individual drinks, stress over early-exit bar surcharges or haggle tensely over a few hundred Baht at 3:00 AM.
Pay what represents fair value for the experience. Paying too little guarantees an awkward morning and burns goodwill; paying slightly over the going rate for great company is one of the cheapest investments you can make in being remembered fondly.
Freelancers and other ladies outside the bars
A freelancer is a woman who is not attached to a particular bar. Some work in a bar but are off shift when you meet. Some have day jobs and see foreign men for extra money or a good time. Because there is no bar to pay, you avoid the bar fine and the inflated lady drinks.
That used to mean a lower price overall. It no longer reliably does. Freelancer rates now run close to beer bar rates, and Beach Road freelancers commonly open at 1,500 Baht and up. What you save is the bar fine and the drinks, not necessarily the negotiated amount.
Where you find them:
- Beach Road and Walking Street. Walk the strip in the evening and the ladies will make themselves known. A smile and a hello is a perfectly good start.
- Late-night dance clubs. Where off-duty ladies from the bars go to unwind, and a mate swears the best deals turn up late in the night.
- Dating apps such as ThaiFriendly and Tinder. A mate swears by them. Profiles can mislead, so agree the terms before you meet and keep the first meeting in a public place.
Approach with manners. Do not assume every Thai woman is working. Make eye contact and wait for a positive sign. If it is clear she is not interested, smile and move on. Unwanted advances are the fastest way to turn a friendly street into a hostile one.
The Added Risks of Freelancers
Saving the bar fine strips away the safety rails. Without a bar holding her details, the risks rise significantly:
- Zero Accountability: If cash or valuables vanish from your room, a freelancer disappears into the night with no mamasan or manager to trace her. Opportunistic room theft is far higher with independents.
- Higher STI Rates: Unlike venue-based workers who face peer pressure and house rules, freelancers have no health oversight. Some will accept offers of extra cash from previous clients to skip condoms, drastically increasing infection risks.
- Drink Tampering: Almost every serious drugging and robbery case in Pattaya involves late-night freelancers picked up off Beach Road, dating apps, or outside clubs.
- The Bottom Line: Never compromise on protection, lock all valuables in the safe before she enters the room, and only stay at hotels where security strictly logs her Thai National ID card at the front desk.
Ladyboys
Ladyboys are a large and visible part of the scene, on Walking Street and Beach Road in particular. If you are not interested, you will need an eye for it, because many look strikingly feminine and fool first-timers. Check the waist, the hands and feet and the voice.
Warning: Be very careful on Walking Street late at night. There are many ladyboys working that street and it is easy for a drunk man to be caught out. My full breakdown is at Ladyboys: How to Spot.
Risk management when there is no bar
A bar gives you a witness and a place to complain. A freelancer does not, so you provide the oversight.
- Hotel procedure. Many Pattaya hotels require a guest to register at reception. The usual arrangement is that the visitor leaves an ID card at the front desk until she leaves, and some hotels charge a joiner fee. Others are guest-friendly and charge nothing. Check before you book, because being turned away at reception with a lady beside you is an awkward end to a night. Do not argue with staff about it. The policy protects you as well.
- Guard your valuables. Use the room safe for passport, spare cash and cards. Carry only what you need for the night and keep it on you. If she runs off with something, you will have a difficult time finding her.
- Stay sober enough to understand what you agreed. Most freelancer horror stories I hear start with a man who could barely stand.
- Avoid isolated places and unmarked cars. Do not follow a woman you met an hour ago somewhere you do not know.
- Trust your instincts. If a conversation becomes confusing or pushy, leave.

Red flags: what Pattaya ladies will try and how to spot it
Most ladies are simply doing a job. A minority work the customer harder than the job requires, and the tricks are well worn.
The sob story
The standard set is a sick buffalo, a sick parent, a hospital bill, a school fee, a motorbike that needs repairs and a “debt” to the bar that must be paid before she can leave. Some are true. Many are told to several men at once, which is an efficient use of a good story.
A test works better than suspicion. Before you hand over money, ask yourself whether you would give the same amount as a gift with nothing expected in return. If you would, fine. If you are giving it on the understanding that she will be there next time or that it makes you special, you are paying for a feeling and you should know it.
Sponsors and long-distance patronage
A sponsor is a man who sends a lady money regularly, usually on the understanding that she has stopped working in the bars. In many cases she has not, and some ladies have more than one sponsor.
Long-distance patronage rarely ends well for the same reason. You are on the other side of the world, she is in a city built on transactions and neither of you can check what the other is doing. If you want to help someone, take your time working out how before you send a cent.
The 3 day rule
The best protection I know against getting too attached is the 3 day rule: never take the same lady for more than three days in a row. Some men prefer two days and some go by the hour. What matters is that you have a number before you land. Changing partners often keeps a short trip low-risk. A long-time arrangement stretched into 24 hours a day, with her clothes in your wardrobe, is a girlfriend experience, and it has all the complications of one.

Breaking the Rule: The Field-Tested Strategy
There are benefits to breaking the three-day rule, but only if you have the discipline to stay in the driver’s seat. If you’re in town for a few weeks, a smart idea is having a strict one-night rule for the first week or two. Treat it as field research: you get the lay of the land, see different possibilities, and avoid getting boxed in early. If there’s real chemistry and she’s great company with zero drama, spend your final week with her. You already know what else is out there; you’ve skipped the early-trip infatuation trap, and you can enjoy a girlfriend experience on your own terms without losing your head. This is not without risk, so be careful.
