Pattaya Ladyboys

Photo of a Pattaya ladyboy

Pattaya ladyboys are a common worry for first-timers, and it is a fair one. Plenty of them look like any other woman in the bar. A man who has had a few beers can find himself in a very awkward conversation at 2 am.

Some men go looking for ladyboys and some want to steer well clear. This guide is for both. If you are in the first group, it will tell you where to go and what to watch. If you are in the second, it will help you avoid the mistake, and it covers the part that costs men real money, which is the street.

What to Call Them

The Thai word you will hear is katoey (กะเทย). It covers a wide range of people, from men who dress up to women who have completed a full transition, and it is used casually and without any malice. The more polite modern Thai term is phuying kham-phet (ผู้หญิงข้ามเพศ), which means transgender woman. You will rarely hear it in a bar.

In the nightlife industry the standard word is still ladyboy, and that is what the bars, the signs and the ladies themselves use. I use it on this site for the same reason. Use it politely and nobody will mind. Say it with a smirk and you will find out how quickly a friendly bar goes cold.

Why the Old Giveaways Have Stopped Working

The old advice was to check for a big Adam’s apple, a deep voice, broad shoulders, height and large hands. That was reasonable ten or fifteen years ago. It is far less reliable now, for three reasons.

  1. Surgery is cheap and routine here. A tracheal shave to reduce the Adam’s apple, facial feminisation surgery and vocal surgery are all standard work in Thailand, at prices that would shock a man from Sydney or London. The features that used to give the game away can be fixed.
  2. Many of the younger ladies started hormones during puberty. That means they never developed a broad male frame in the first place. They often have naturally feminine shapes, soft skin, small hands and feminine voices. Height and shoulders tell you very little about a lady in her twenties who began treatment at 14.
  3. A good number of the working ladies are fully post-operative. They have had sex reassignment surgery. The old Crocodile Dundee test, where you find out in the bedroom, is no longer a definitive check, because in many cases there is nothing to find out.

I have not tested any of this personally. A mate who knows the scene swears the surgery side is even more common than most visitors realise.

The Checklist: What Still Helps and What Does Not

None of these is proof on its own. Together they give you a reasonable read, and only a reasonable one.

Weak Signals (Do Not Rely on These)

  • Adam’s apple. A missing one proves nothing now. A tracheal shave is a routine procedure.
  • Height and shoulders. Still worth a glance, but a tall lady is not automatically a ladyboy and a petite one is not automatically a woman.
  • A deep voice. A deep voice is a strong hint. A soft voice tells you nothing, because of hormones and vocal surgery.
  • Heavy makeup. Every lady in the go-gos wears plenty. It means nothing.

Signals That Still Count for Something

  • Where you are. On Soi 6/1 or in a dedicated ladyboy go-go, assume everyone is a ladyboy. Nobody is hiding it. In a mixed area, treat it as an open question.
  • Who she drinks with. Ladyboys tend to hang out in groups with other ladyboys, particularly on the street.
  • How she approaches. If a lady on the street is very forward, very flattering and very quick to touch, slow down and think about why.
  • The hands, feet and jaw. Still worth a look, and still a mixed result on the younger ladies.

The Check That Works

Ask. It is the only reliable method left. Ask her plainly and quietly, or ask the mamasan or another member of staff. Nobody in a bar is offended by a polite question, and most ladies are upfront when you ask directly. The exception is the freelancer on a dark street corner, who has every reason to say whatever gets you into a taxi.

The biggest obstacle to a sensible answer is still alcohol. A man who is sober enough to ask a question and listen to the answer rarely ends up in the wrong bed by accident. A man who is not sober enough will get there eventually.

Where to Go if You Want Ladyboys

Managed venues are where you want to be. The ladies are on the books, the bar knows them, and someone is there to talk to if a night goes sideways. For the wider geography, see Pattaya Bars Nightlife Guide.

Soi 6/1

Soi 6 is mostly female bars (although some LB bars exist), and that is where most first-timers get confused. The parallel alley, Soi 6/1, is almost exclusively ladyboy beer bars. It is a good place for a daytime or early evening drink, and the hassle is very low. You can sit, have a beer and look around without being dragged anywhere. If you have wandered down it by accident, no harm done.

Soi Buakhao

Open-air bars catering to ladyboys and their admirers operate along Soi Buakhoa and Soi Chaiyapoon (Soi Pothole). Unlike 6/1, this is an evening and late-night strip, with a mix of casual open-air beer bars and massage shops. Drink prices are cheaper, the crowd is mostly expats and regulars, and you get the same relaxed, low-pressure vibe where you can grab a stool, watch the street and decide if it is for you.

The Real Danger Is the Street, Not the Bar

Most of the trouble I hear about does not come from the managed bars. It comes from Beach Road freelancers and late-night street corners, particularly along Beach Road and Second Road. This is where the men who lose gold, wallets and phones lose them.

The Hugger-Mugger

Pattaya ladyboy in Walking Street

The classic move goes like this. It is late, you are drunk and you are on your own. Two or three freelancers come up and surround you. They are friendly, they flatter you, and they are very affectionate. There are arms around your neck, hands on your chest and plenty of laughing. It feels like you are the most popular man in Pattaya.

While you enjoy the attention, one of them unclasps your gold chain. Another lifts your wallet or your phone. By the time you realise, they are walking away laughing and you are standing on the footpath with a very expensive lesson. It takes seconds. You will not feel it happen, because that is the point of the hug.

Whoever is doing it, the pattern is the same: a group, a drunk tourist, a lot of contact and a quick exit. Being a man on his own at 3 am is the qualifying condition.

Street Rules

  • Do not wear gold chains or expensive jewellery at night. Not on Beach Road, not on Second Road and not on the walk home. Leave the good watch in the room safe too.
  • Keep your hands and your phone in front of you. Wallet in a front pocket, phone in a zipped pocket, and only the cash you need for the night.
  • Do not let a group close in. If two or three come at you at once, step back, smile, say no and keep walking. Friendly and firm works better than angry, and angry loses face and starts trouble.
  • Do not walk alone when you are drunk. Almost every story I have heard starts there. Take a Grab, Bolt or baht bus home rather than walking a dark stretch.
  • Never go with a street freelancer to a place you do not know. If she wants to take you somewhere other than your hotel, the answer is no.

Room Security: Managed Venue or Street

There is a real difference between a lady you meet in a managed venue and one you pick up on Beach Road. In a bar or go-go, the venue keeps staff records and the lady has submitted her ID to work there. If something goes missing, there is a name, a manager and a paper trail, and the tourist police will have something to work with. A street freelancer gives you none of that. You do not know her name, her ID or where she lives, and she has nothing to lose by disappearing.

That is why the hotel matters. Use a guest-friendly hotel that registers visitors at reception and holds her Thai national ID card at reception until she leaves. It is a small inconvenience for her and a large deterrent to walk-in room theft. If the hotel takes her card, she has a reason to come back downstairs and collect it. A hotel that waves everyone through without a card is a hotel where things go missing.

Whatever the arrangement, put your passport, spare cash and cards in the room safe before she arrives. Carry only what you need and keep it on you. More on the hotel side in Where to stay in Pattaya and on the other tricks in Common Scams.

Money, Manners and Agreeing Everything First

The bar mechanics are the same as for any other lady, so read Pattaya Bars Nightlife Guide for lady drinks and bar fines. The one rule I would repeat is to agree the price, the length of time and whether it covers the taxi home before you leave the bar, and to say the amount in Baht out loud. Street freelancers open high, so expect to negotiate and be ready to walk away.

Treat every lady with courtesy, whatever she is. Politeness is not a favour. It keeps you welcome in the bars and out of arguments with people who know the neighbourhood far better than you do.

The Short Version

  • Do not trust the old giveaways. Surgery and early hormones have made them unreliable.
  • Many working ladies are fully post-operative, so the bedroom is not a test.
  • If you are unsure, ask her or ask the staff, and do it sober.
  • Stick to Soi 6/1 and Soi Buakhao if you want the managed scene.
  • Leave the gold at home, avoid Beach Road and Second Road drunk and alone, and never let a group close in on you.
  • Use a guest-friendly hotel that holds her ID at reception, and lock your valuables in the safe.

Most of the ladyboys in Pattaya are working professionals who want an easy night and a fair price, the same as everyone else in the industry. The men who get into trouble are usually drunk, alone and on the wrong street at the wrong hour.
